Introduction to Audiologic Rehabilitation

CLEAR, and SPEECH, developed by and Brockett and Schow (2001) and Schow (2001), constitute another approach to providing short-term audiologic rehabilitation. Used primarily in conjunction with the fitting/orientation process, these tools involve presenting key aspects of the rehabilitation process. HIO BASICS focuses on presenting information related primarily to the care and effective use of hearing aids. CLEAR provides suggestions for the person with a hearing loss regarding the communication process, while SPEECH gives helpful suggestions for the significant other that are designed to facilitate communication. The latter two handouts are closely tied to Schum’s (1989) Clear Speech. More detailed descriptions of all three of these handouts are found in Chapters 2 and 10.
